Summer traveling is what most of us look forward to all year long and when you have a bun in the oven it can make the experience a little more stressful.
Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean traveling is off limits. Usually you’ll just need to take your adventures at a slower pace with some extra precautions thrown in the mix to keep your vacation as safe and comfortable as possible for you and your baby to be.
Beating the Heat
The biggest obstacle you might be facing is that unforgiving summer heat. Unless of course you’re traveling to the North Pole for your summer vacation, it might be smart to pack smart to stay cool and comfortable for your trip. If you are going to the North Pole however, have a great time!
When you’re pregnant, your skin is more susceptible to damage from the sun and it can be more difficult to stay cool. Make sure you’re wearing a sunscreen that’s a higher SPF that also puts moisture back into thirsty summer skin. Pack lightweight clothing that’s breathable to keep cool as you’re traveling and it’s always a good idea to dress in layers in case you catch a chill while you’re traveling from one place to another.
Growing a person isn’t exactly comfortable and it can make long trips in the car anything but fun. While planning your road trip vacation it’s smart to factor in frequent breaks to stretch your legs and use the restroom. Bring pillows and blankets to keep you comfortable in the car and able to catch up on naps along the way. Stay hydrated and keep some healthy snacks within reach to keep those hunger pains at bay. Don’t be afraid to slip those shoes off and wear pants with a little give to keep yourself as comfortable as possible while you’re spending a few hours sitting.
Before embarking on any journey it’s always a good idea to check in with your care provider and birth team to make sure you’re medically cleared for traveling for an extended period of time. Usually, the second trimester is the best place to travel, and you might be cutting it close to your baby’s big arrival when you book a vacation away from home after 36 weeks. Regardless, it’s important to know where you can go in case of emergency or if your baby decides to make their debut while you’re out and about. While flying, try to book your seats close to the restroom or opt for the extra leg room so you can stretch out and get a little cozy during your flight.
Cruisin’ on a Cruise
A cruise is an awesome all-inclusive getaway but can be a little more challenging while you’re pregnant. If nausea is a constant battle for you, some women find it helpful to book rooms that are interior and don’t have a balcony where they can see the water and others find the view to be more helpful. If the cruise line permits food, bringing some nausea drops can help you nip the morning sickness in the bud. Make sure you’re in touch with your doctor before, during and after your trip and traveling with your medical records is a must. If you’re planning any land excursions, it’s important that you’re steering clear of risky foods like many kinds of seafood and only drinking bottled water.

A little planning goes a long way if you’re expecting and traveling during the summer. Make sure your itinerary includes opportunities to rest, relax and rejuvenate as well as some medical options in case of emergency.
