“Alternative Birth”

The free dictionary.com just gave me the definition of “alternative birth” and I thought I should share it with you.

Alternative birth – a method of childbirth that avoids intrusive high-tech medicine in favor of more natural and homely settings.

When did we as a society decide that intrusive high tech medical intervention in hospital settings was the “normal” way to give birth?

I mean it is certainly an option and thank goodness for those interventions when we need them, but It seems to me that if we stop talking about natural birth as “alternative birth” it might have a chance at becoming a little more main stream.

Birth Choices, Labor Doula, Birth Plan, Birth Wishes, Water Birth,
Hospital Water Birth

Why do these terms provoke eye rolls and sarcasm? They are just choices specific to a woman’s desire! How are they offensive to anyone?!

Don’t get me wrong, ultimately what I support is a woman’s empowerment through choice. If her birth choice is a hospital birth with an epidural, I support it! If her birth choice is a hospital water birth, I support it! If her birth choice is a home birth, I support it! Get where I’m goin’ here?!?!

Childbirth Education followed by deliberate birth choices and a hand picked support team (partner, labor doula, doctor or midwife, loved one, etc.) aid a new mother in feeling positive about her overall birth experience!

Who wouldn’t want that?!?
